Brownell Boat Works in Mattapoisett, MA was founded in the late 1950s by the legendary David “Freddie” Brownell, an inventor (the hydraulic boat trailer and the adjustable boat stand), who was also an avid fisherman and wanted a boat capable of mastering the rough New England waters. The seaworthy, soft-riding, and dry modified deep-vee hull was originally designed by famed Boston yacht design firm, Eldridge-McInnis (Walter McInnis, Naval Architect). Described as “the sportscar of the sportfish (boats)” for her gorgeous classic looks and great handling, but built “like a tank” of cold-molded Douglas fir with multiple layers of Kevlar skin and a good amount of epoxy resin, with full length stringers and frames of laminated Douglas fir, and marine-grade plywood with Kevlar skin for the bulkheads and decks. Once the flagship of the Brownell yard, BYTE ME is a gorgeous sportfishing “work of art” with a 30-knot cruise from updated 1000hp CAT 12.9 diesels; her joinery work is varnished teak using lap joints for a beautiful fit and finish.
BYTE ME underwent a major refit in 2017 at 5-star rated Blue Devil Boatworks yard in Wanchese, NC, an area famed for its boatbuilding. She returned to the Blue Devil yard in 2022 for building in the new sonar tube and installing the Simrad SY50 Hull Unit Sonar. A powerful, compact fishing-finding omni-sonar device with traditional big-boat sonar features, it has 256 channels for receiving and transmitting, including single-ping and FM transmission, and a sensor for pitch and roll compensation. The frequency range allows for surveying as deep as 2,000 meters (6000 feet), while omnidirectional sonar beams sweep the water from plus-10 degrees to minus 60 degrees around the vessel. A terrific advantage!
